Water and an Observation about irc
its a lovely sunday afternoon - just gorgeous, feels like summer. I have spent some time outside getting some colour so i can fool you all into thinking i have a healthy glow. So I have hung out my washing in the hopes it will be ready for when i go out and visit my gran.. and i hope i remember what room she is in, since i usually follow mum.
Are You guys looking forward to winter? I know I am, and I am hoping that it will rain alot more than it is. I have been reading people's posts and no one seems to be concerned that Perth is suffering a severe lack of water, and we have just been thru the sprinkler bans which havent been placed for 30 years, and could in all likelihood, be full bans by the time summer rolls around. Now, last winter, the damns were at about 33% capacity, and they hadnt increased much over the winter cos of so little rain, now we are down to 18%. its quite possible that we could run out of water in 2 years. There has been some discussion about what type of water alternatives they could look at to increase our water capacity. De-salination plants, pumping water from the south west, sinking bores into the artesin basin below perth, and heaven forbid, Ernie Bridge's pipe dream of piping down water from the North West.
The option they have selected, by far the cheapest and easiest, is sinking wells into the Artesian basin below us. However, it is also the most environmentally unsound, because the potential damage to the fragile system of aquifers below the surface, we could very well lower the water table, and kill all the plants and trees. So in 10 years Perth would have water, but no parks. We would end up wasting water by watering gardens from the very source which kills them in the first place. The problem is alot more serious than people think. I believe if the Water Corp people actually informed perth residents about HOW bad it is, we might pleasantly surprise the public servants and behave better about our water.
I generally dont post alot about IRC - so I thought i would today.
I have stuff to do for IRC, creating an ops assessment for #chatzone, so i can see who needs training etc - feels like a fun time turning into a job. This is where some people take themselves very serious, and in #chatzone, everything is serious, the ops, the owner, the users!. I actually dislike the whole ops level stuff. Makes it hard, and some users really do take their IRC seriously - to the point i guess, where we have rules, to make sure that chatters are dealt with fairly, so that power tripping ops dont abuse (if we have them) and to deal with abusive users. I dunno, i dont think i have a right to complain too much, cos i am still there. One thing I do like, is that the rules are enforced and the owner does back the ops.
Very different from other channels like #casual, with Rob, the cassanova owner who installs his latest women into the channel, and dont get me wrong, his girlfriends are cool people, just that it feels so wrong. and he bans cos he doesnt like the way someone behaves cos it reminds them of [matty], whoever he was. and of course #allnitecafe, fully of people who abuse ops, racist etc even if it is supposedly a joke, there are still real people behind the nicks who are being teased mercilessly by others. (sorry AnT, but its true).
And something else i dont understand about IRC - ops who break existing rules (talking about #sydney here) say they dont care about suspension, but put up website and stuff and taunt, saying that people take their irc too seriously and yet they obviously care enough to put up a website about it. Hypocrisy at its best. and that bugs me aswell, that ops put up websites about other ops and it doesnt get them deleted. However it did get them glined :D.
And in my channel, people come and go and that is great, but if someone appears they dont like, why dont my ops exercise their right to ban? instead of leaving and depriving me of their company. *looks at ben* I dont have many rules in my channel, one of them is dont ban other ops, but regular people that they may not like, Ops have the right to ban them, I have no problem with that. …
well over for today. Sorry for the long post ![]()
